What are the new guidelines for Liquids, Aerosols and Gels in carry on baggage?
To increase your safety, there are new rules for taking liquids, aerosols and gels on flights into and out of Australia. These rules also apply when transiting on international flights within Australia.
These new rules are needed to protect you from the threat of liquid explosives. They are in effect from 31 March 2007. For further information on the new restrictions you can visit the Australian Government website by clicking on the link below. Please note you will be leaving the Sydney Airport Shopping website.

How much Duty Free can I purchase?
As of February 1, 2005, the duty free purchase allowances in Australia have increased. Travellers entering Australia are entitled to the allowances described below.
General
The limit is now AU$900 worth of goods (AU$450 for people under 18) including gifts, souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrates, jewellery, watches and sporting equipment. Alcohol and tobacco products cannot be included in this allowance.
These goods can be:
- obtained overseas
- purchased in Australia duty or tax free before departure
- goods for which a tax refund has been approved through the Tourist Refund Scheme; or
- purchased from an inwards duty free shop on arrival.
Alcohol
2.25 litres of alcoholic beverages for each passenger aged 18 years or over.
Tobacco
250 cigarettes, or 250 grams of cigars or tobacco products for each passenger aged 18 years or over.
You can pool your duty free concessions if you are a family travelling together. Most personal items such as new clothing, footwear, and articles for personal hygiene and grooming (but not fur or perfume concentrates) may also be brought into Australia in accompanied baggage free from duty and/or tax. If you are unsure of your duty or tax free entitlements, speak to a Customs officer or call 1300 363 263.
NOTE: if you exceed any of the concession limits set out above, Australian Customs will charge you the duty and tax on the entire importation or purchase within that group of items.
